SPORTS REHABILITATION & PHYSICAL THERAPY (CIP Code: 51.2604)

Students will learn essential skills directly related to the Athletic Training and Physical Therapy career paths. Students will learn to design safe and effective exercise prescriptions, conduct individual exercise programs, and fitness testing. Students will be prepared for employment in a wide variety of settings that include but are not limited to, athletic teams, hospitals, corporate wellness programs, strength and conditioning, clinical rehabilitation programs, and fitness clubs. In addition, the program serves as a strong foundation for students wishing to pursue advanced degrees in the field of exercise science or enter professional disciplines such as physical or occupational therapy.

Program Overview and Outcomes
This is an instructional program designed to introduce and prepare a pathway for individuals to enter the fitness and rehabilitation healthcare fields. Individuals will be able to apply technical knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology, response to exercise, medical conditions, neuromusculoskeletal pathologies, therapeutic modalities, injury prevention, rehabilitation, exercise prescription, CPR, and First Aid. Students will be encouraged to explore and develop plans for future employment or continuing their education to pursue post-secondary degrees in the healthcare and sports medicine fields. Upon completing the program, students will be prepared to enter the workforce and be college-ready.

Cooperative Education Opportunities
Cooperative Education allows students to be employed during the school day while gaining meaningful instruction in a technical area, applying classroom knowledge to real-world experiences, and developing life-long career skills. Students may be allowed to go to work for a number of days determined by their teacher and the cooperative education coordinator.
Task List
A program task list is an instructional tool used to measure the technical competency of a student. During your enrollment in the Sports Rehab and PT program, you will be taught and assessed on the following tasks:

Course Materials
NMTCC requires that all students be dressed in professional attire while in Sports Rehab and PT Lab classes. Lack of any of the following items will be reason for the Instructor to disallow certain lab activities and will result in a reduction of the daily work ethic grade.
1. NMTCC “Sports Rehab and PT” Program shirt (Program shirt available for purchase here.
2. Full-length, mid to high-rise BLACK jogger style pants (no sweatpant material). Athletic or scrub material is appropriate.
3. Black athletic shorts (not leggings) for labs in which access to the lower extremity is required.
4. Option to participate in whirlpool immersion- requires appropriate bathing suit/bathing attire (trunks and/or one-piece swimsuit).
5. Closed-toe sneakers/tennis shoes with tie laces must be worn in the lab area at all times.
6. Long hair must be tied back and secured to not present a safety or catching hazard on equipment.
7. Nails must be neat, clean, and trimmed.
8. Jewelry must be kept to a minimum and not present a hazard to equipment or exercises.
9. Observe standards of personal hygiene: clean hair appropriately tied up, no perfume, and clean fingernails. Bathe regularly and use deodorant.
10. Take pride in your appearance as a student at NMTCC.
Uniform compliance is required during any lab activity or when representing anything relating to NMTCC. If, for any reason, a student’s uniform does not meet the prescribed standards outlined in this policy, the student may be assigned alternative duties by the instructor and not be allowed in the lab that day. Each instance will result in points deducted from your daily work ethic grade.
Program Fee: All students are also required to pay an activity fee of thirty-five dollars ($35) – (separate check made payable to “North Montco Technical Career Center” or payable online)
Textbooks / Learning Management System / Communication
Textbooks will be kept at NMTCC. Assignments and information can be accessed through our Canvas learning management system.

Daily Class Procedures
Students will arrive to class, place their belongings in their locker, dress for lab. Students will sit down, work on the daily Do-Now assignment, and wait for further instruction from the teacher. Students will stay productive throughout the class period. Students will clean up their space or lab area before dismissal time.
Classroom Rules
Students in the Sports Rehabilitation & Physical Therapy Program are expected to follow all classroom rules and procedures daily. Some of these rules include, but are not limited to:
1. You must read and follow all school rules.
2. Be respectful!
3. Come to class prepared (uniform, assignments completed, notebook/folder/pencils ready).
4. Hall passes must be issued before being permitted to leave class at any time.
5. Never touch any equipment unless instructed to or given permission to do so.
6. Equipment is NEVER to leave the classroom unless authorized.
7. Please treat other people’s property as you would like people to treat your property.
8. No cell phones in the lab/classroom unless specifically permitted by the instructor.
9. Your best effort is expected at all times.
10. Come to class with a positive attitude.
11. You are expected to follow all lab rules and instructions given by your teacher to participate. Failure to follow lab rules will result in a failure for that day.
12. Using the equipment and technology is a privilege.
13. You may not use the equipment or technology for any other reason, except for the purpose explained by the teacher. At any time, the teacher has the right to take away or forbid the use of the equipment or technology for any amount of time.
14. Students are responsible for the proper care and maintenance of all equipment and technology used in this program. In the case of a student destroying or damaging the equipment or technology, he/she may be responsible for reimbursement of the equipment or technology.
15. The teacher will give an alternative assignment for those who fail to follow these rules.
Discipline Procedures:
1. First act of misbehaving for the school year is a warning.
2. Second act of misbehaving for the school year is an assigned seat at the front of the room.
3. Third act of misbehaving for the school year is a write-up and phone call home.
4. Fourth act of misbehaving for the school year, we create a behavior contract and a phone call home.
5. Fifth act of misbehaving for the school year, you are referred to the Dean of Students and a phone call home.
Each discipline infraction will result in points deducted from your work ethic grade.
Expectations for Clinical Scenarios
Students will be expected to actively participate in hands-on learning by taking roles of both clinician and patient. Students must be prepared for:
· Engaging in close personal space with classmates in a professional manner.
· Giving and receiving appropriate physical touch necessary for learning clinical skills
· Communicating any concerns or discomfort to the instructor in advance
Professionalism, respect for classmates, and adherence to ethical boundaries are essential. Failure to participate appropriately may impact skill development and grades.
Safety
Safety is not an option! Safety is YOUR responsibility! Students are required to follow all rules and regulations. In addition to following all NMTCC’s listed and/ or posted safety and MSDS Policies, refer to the specific equipment manufacturer’s user, operator, or consumer guides and or shop manuals for complete safety details when using any equipment. Students are not permitted to use any equipment or tools unless they have received and documented that they have received the appropriate safety instruction.
Physical Criteria
Grading Policy
Knowledge grades are based on projects, tests, assignments, and homework. Knowledge grades are 40% of the grade.
Skill grades are based upon visual assessments, job completion, and data-based proof of skills. Skills grades are 30% of the grade.
Work Ethics (employability skills) are graded daily. Work ethic is 30% of the grade.
Attendance Policy
Due to the amount of work it takes to complete some of the assignments, your attendance is essential to get the most out of your learning experience. If you are going to be absent or late, please have your parent or guardian call the school or bring in a note. Students who are absent will receive a Work Ethic grade of "0" for the day. If the absence is excused, the student will receive a Work Ethic grade of a "5" with an opportunity to make up the assignment and have their Work Ethic grade changed to a "10". Students who are late will receive a Work Ethic grade of a "5" for the day. If the lateness is excused, the student will receive a Work Ethic grade of a "5" with an opportunity to make up the assignment and have their Work Ethic grade changed to a "10".
Senior Portfolio
Every student must complete a Senior Portfolio. Portfolios will be created by following the sequence of grade-level assignments. Senior Portfolio artifacts will be graded per program expectations and assignment criteria and be included in the marking period grade for which the assignment is due. Portfolios will be housed in their Google Drive. Students will be able to take the portfolios with them or have access to them after graduation.
Honors Course
Students have the opportunity to enroll in the Honors level course of their CTE program. The Honors course is for 12th-grade students who have demonstrated a high level of interest and achievement in their program and who aspire to an advanced level of learning. Students in the Honors course will be exposed to individualized industry-related advanced work, rigorous study of CTE subject matter with embedded academic content, and practical application of knowledge and skills to work-based situations. Students must meet the required prerequisites and submit a completed Academic Teacher Recommendation form during their 11th-grade year to be considered for the Honors level course.
Prerequisites:
100% of POS Tasks
GPA of >90% in CTE program
GPA of >80% in academic courses
Recommendation Form completed by academic teacher
Specific Industry Certification:
· OSHA 10-hour Course
· CPR/First Aid/AED
