COSMETOLOGY (CIP Code: 46.0399)
Cosmetology students learn the competencies and skills needed to pass the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology practical and written licensing exams through a program that meets the state-required hours of instruction. Students must complete 1250 hours of instruction, with at least a 75% grade average, before they are eligible to take the State Board of Cosmetology license examination. After completing 900 hours, students are able to apply for the state exam. The state will not issue a license until 1250 hours have been successfully completed. The program covers instruction in a) Cosmetology (hair care), b) Esthetics (skin care and make-up), c) Nail Technology, and d) Salon Management. Students apply theory and skills and strengthen competencies through hands-on experience which includes a salon open to the community.
What you will learn:
Theory, Scalp & Shampoo Treatments,Hair cutting/coloring/styling, Chemical hair reconstruction, Esthetics, Nail Technology, Customer Relations, Salon Management, Receptionist duties.
Note: All students who need a physical education credit should make every attempt to schedule it at their sending school. The only physical education class available for cosmetology students at North Montco is an independent study course due to the hour requirement for the certification.
All Cosmetology hours expire four years from the enrollment date. If 1250 hours of instruction are not completed by a student's graduation date, hours will need to be accrued independently at a private institution in order to be eligible to obtain State Board of Cosmetology certification for Pennsylvania.

Social Security Number Information
Social Security Number Information for Cosmetology students provided by the State Board of Cosmetology.
A state law effective January 1997 required that applicants provide their social security numbers on all applications for licenses and licensure renewals. Section 301.1(a)(2) of Act 124 of 1996 amends the Domestic Relations Code. All government agencies are required under the Act to require the social security number of an individual on any application for a professional or occupational license. The Act also requires government agencies, including the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs, to provide a licensee’s name, address, and social security number to the Department of Public Welfare. The amendments were authorized under the Federal Welfare Reform Act known as the Federal Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996. The Department of Public Welfare is the state agency responsible for enforcing child support orders.
Social Security numbers are also required for students in cosmetology schools. This number is used to verify an individual’s identity for those instances when an individual contacts the board with a request for a Certification of School Hours earned. This application is a board form and requires a social security number. If the student is a legal alien who has not yet had the opportunity to obtain a social security number, the federal INS number may be substituted until a social security number is obtained.
