Biotechnology:

Biotechnology is a diverse and challenging field with excellent opportunities for advancement and career growth in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, as well as research and clinical laboratories.

The program introduces students to core competencies and practical applications of principles and techniques. Students comply with safety guidelines while learning laboratory techniques of microbiology, preparing media and solutions and maintaining inventory and supplies. Specialized training is then provided in cell culture, protein purification, recombinant DNA technology and forensics. Documentation is essential in all aspects of instruction and investigation.

In partnership with Montgomery County Community College, a seniors-only course is available at NMTCC. Students earn six college credits for an introductory survey course in Biotechnology and a laboratory course emphasizing technical skills and instrumentation.  Academic content is presented at a college-level pace and includes the subject areas of genetics, microbiology, and immunology.  Specialized topics include genomics, bioinformatics, bioterrorism, vaccines, gene therapy, clinical trials, forensics, and bioethics.  The application process includes a personal interview, a visit to the Biotechnology laboratory, a letter of recommendation from a science teacher, and submission of a completed application form with a high school transcript.  Acceptance into the program is determined in the spring.  A reading assignment that serves as a review of basic biology concepts and a general introductory overview of Biotechnology is required before the Fall start date. This program will be offered to high achieving juniors and seniors during an AM and a PM session as long as there is adequate enrollment. Since the AM class starts at 7:30 AM, students are required to provide their own transportation to NMTCC.
